ChatGPT Alternatives for PDF Research: Gemini Notebook and Claude

By Benjamin Thomas 1 min read
Two ChatGPT alternatives for PDF research are Gemini Notebook and Claude. This comparison explains their documented workflows and gives you a test to run on a report you know well.

Gemini Notebook for checking citations

Google documents PDF import and clickable citations. Select the sources relevant to your question, then open each citation to check that the passage supports the answer.

Claude for working a PDF into a project

Claude supports PDF uploads in chats and projects. Use a project when the report is one input alongside a brief or other reference files. Ask for a page number and short excerpt for each claim, then verify both against the original.

Run a three-question check

  1. Ask for a table value with its unit and year.
  2. Ask for a claim with a supporting quote and page reference.
  3. Ask about a detail you know the report omits and check whether the tool admits it is missing.
Use the same PDF and prompts in fresh sessions. Record number errors, unsupported citations and guesses separately. Test scanned documents separately from searchable PDFs because OCR can change what the tool sees.
